Life as a Christian versus Buddhism As a Christian you have taken on the likeness of Jesus Christ in the flesh. You are to walk and talk as he did when he walked the earth. But, as a Buddhist, you take on the likeness of a child that did not want to be a â€Å"god.† I will talk about the differences between Christianity and Buddhism and then give information on the matters. But, first we will have to understand the formation and beginnings of the two religions. Buddhism, which has been around for over 2500 years, was started because of a little boy who was chosen by his father after birth to be significant because of certain markings or signs on the little baby’s body. Growing up, this boy was sheltered from all negativity and given a life where he was never allowed to see or experience anything negative or bad. His dad felt that he would have so much compassion for people and want to save them from hurt if he saw the bad things in the world. And, his dad wanted him to become an Emperor and rule the people, not feel sorry for them and try to save them from harm. The very thing that his dad thought turned out to be true for Siddhartha Gautama. Siddhartha snuck away to experience the real world and once exposed, decided he wanted to give up his life of luxury and live a simple life while finding the answers he was looking for. My Job at Family Dollar Essay My job is an essential asset that provides me with earning power and results in self-fulfillment. However, this was not the case when I made the choice to apply for the Family Dollar store. My experience at the Family Dollars store was the worst. There were many things that contributed to me disliking this job. Having tons to do and not having good management. I was not earning much money nor would I ever get breaks. I would spend days with 12 hours shifts with no time to neither eat nor be able to use the bathroom. With this experienced, I learned a lesson taking a less desirable job. I engage a cash register position at the Family Dollars store which was the worst job ever. My job duties as cash register sinks. I was expected to lift very heavy boxes during my entire shift. I was the only person who worked on floor. Whenever there was a customer, I would have to run to the cash register in order for the customer to be attended. None of the employees would realize how much stress I was under. During the rare times, when I was not stocking nor watching the register, I had to go around the store making sure all of the merchandise was neatly arranged. I had to take a shopping cart and put back all the items that the customer returns back on the shelf. I very must hated went the customer came to return worn clothes to the store. There are many reasons why my position was horrible. The amount of work I was expected to do was unbelievable. I disliked working at the Family Dollar because of my lack of breaks. I would come to work directly after school and work until at least an hour after closing each night without any down time. The only time I got a break was the day when I worked a twelve hour shift. I only got a fifteen minute break. When I will ask my manager to take my break, my manager would tell me to wait and finish my job. After I finish the job I was doing and then went to take my break. When I came back from my break, my manager was mad at me for taking my break too late. I reminded my manager what she said, to first finish what I was doing before I can take my break. I told my manager that under the Florida labor laws, employee can take a 15 minute short break when employee work 6-8 hours shift. I need my breaks. I cannot continue working for 6-8 hours straight without a break. Also, during the lengthy work day, I only got paid for the hours I worked during my normal shift, not the extra time that I worked. I only made minimum wage working at the Family Dollar. I hated this job. I was only working at the Family Dollar to help my parents make ends met. I wanted to help my parents out, but I was only getting paid minimum wage which is not that much. I didn’t understand why I had to get paid minimum wage, if I spoke English. I was only making $280 per week. What I was getting paid was not enough money for all things that I was doing. Out of that amount, I had to give my parents $120 every week. I was only left with $60 that I use for gas. I continue to work just to please my parent. I sat down with my manager one day and ask my manager if I can get a raise. Guess what, my manager laughed at me and walk away. I told my manager that I work very hard. I help my manager do her job, but the answer was the same. I felt that my manager was unskilled and unprofessional. When my manager blame me for my manager confusion, causing resentment and anger. As a resolve, I was resentful, angry and was less likely to put all of my energy into my work. The worst part was closing. I had to bring in all of the items from outside. After spending at least an hour bringing in the outside items, and then bring in the tables that the merchandise was displayed on. Besides that I had to sweep and mop the entire store by myself. I was feeling like a slave since I had to do all of this by myself. It was very exhausting and overwhelming. Especially knowing nobody would appreciate me nor give me a hand. By the time I had to leave I was dead. Every day at work when I saw the time that said 30 minutes until closing I would get very happy. I was always deeding to leave. I wanted to get the hell out of there. For all these reason mention above, the Family Dollar was the worst job ever. This is why businesses should have excellent managers to lead their staff. Having an excellent manager will keep the staff up to date and have them working at their fullest potential. Hopefully in my next job my manager is a good one!

The Music of Star Wars The music of Star Wars has become a character of the films much as the characters of the films have become global icons. John Williams contribution to the films (he composed for all six Star Wars films) is among the most widely-known and popular contributions to modern film music. When Williams set out to compose the music for the first film, Star Wars (later re-titled, Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope) in 1977, he only had one Oscar to his name for the score to the 1975 summer blockbuster Jaws. He utilized a variety of musical styles drawing from the golden age of Hollywood and the scores of Max Steiner as well as the late romantic period of Richard Strauss. George Lucas, the creator of Star Wars, wanted the feel of the old movie serials like Flash Gordon and Buck Rogers. Williams is credited with reviving the symphonic scores because of his Star War compositions and of using a technique called leitmotiv most often associated with the operas of Wagner and with Steiner-esque film scores. The use of the leitmotiv anchors the characters of the Star Wars original trilogy, which I will discuss in detail. These themes signify the individual characters as well as plot elements, locations, moods and relationships. Jedi Theme This theme is also titled Binary Sunset in the film score from the scene in which Luke is watching the sunset on Tatooine and contemplating his future in Episode IV. This is the one motif in the trilogy that is consistently developed throughout all three films. The theme represents Obi-Wan Kenobi, the Jedi Knights and The Force. In later films, it is used to represent ideas of fate and destiny. It is an uplifting theme and can be heard throughout the trilogy. There are also brief instances of it in Episode I: The Phantom Menace, Episode II: Attack of the Clones, and Episode III: Revenge of the Sith. Princess Leias Theme (aka Love Theme) This theme represents the romantic side of the trilogy. It is most often used in Episode IV to represent Leia when she is alone (on the merchant ship in the beginning), vulnerable (when she is about to be tortured for information on the Death Star) or shown on the screen. In subsequent episodes, it is developed into a Love Theme between her and Han Solo. This theme also appears later in Episode III after she is born. Imperial Motif Used only in Episode IV, this motif represents the Empire and Darth Vader for this film (although it makes a cameo when Grand Moff Tarkin, commander of the Death Star, is seen in Episode III: Revenge of the Sith). The music is militaristic and not as ominous as the Imperial March introduced in Episode V. The rhythmic and harmonic aspects are developed into the Imperial March in The Empire Strikes Back. Death Star Motif Introduced in Episode IV, it is a four chord motif that plays when the Death Star is shown or when its place is suggested. It is also heard as a more developed theme when the Star Destroyer hits the second Death Star in Episode VI. Jawa Theme/Droid Theme A playful theme used in Episode IV when the Jawas are introduced and later developed into a motif to represent the droids in Episodes V and VI when R2D2 and C3PO are together. The Empire Strikes Back (1980) Principle Motifs Imperial March (aka Darth Vaders Theme) This theme represents the Galactic Empire and, more specifically Darth Vader, starting with Episode V and carrying on through the rest of the films. This theme has achieved an iconic status as representing evil and is used outside of the films to introduce evil (i.e. when Mr. Burns shows up on The Simpsons). Williams retrogrades the theme for the prequel trilogy, embedding it into Anakins theme and his downward spiral to the dark side as well as the rise of the Republic into the Empire. Williams also uses it effectively when Vader dies in Episode VI. Love Theme Developed from Leias Theme in Episode IV, it is heard in Episode V and VI in scenes of romance and when the two characters are sacrificing, including the scene in which Han is frozen and the final moments of Empire when Lando Calrissian is leaving to rescue Han from Jabba The Hut. Yodas Theme This theme is introduced in Episode V and is used throughout the original trilogy and the prequel trilogy. It is mostly associated with Yodas teachings and abilities but can be heard when Luke is utilizing what Yoda has taught him. It is used sparingly in the prequels and mostly for key moments with Yoda. As a side, Williams uses this theme in E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial when a little kid is seen in a Yoda costume. Landos Theme (Cloud City Theme) A march that is heard during the Bespin scenes in Episode V. It is used throughout the Cloud City scenes and a variation is used when Luke arrives to save Leia and Han. Return of the Jedi (1983) Principle Motifs Jabbas Theme This is heard in the opening of Episode VI when the scene takes place in Jabbas Palace. It is mostly tuba and is rolling and bulbous. It was added in the special edition version of Episode IV when a young (and much leaner?!) Jabba confront Han Solo in the hanger of the Millennium Falcon. There is also a disguised version of it in Episode I when Jabba officiates the pod race. Emperors Theme An ominous theme first used in Episode VI, and developed more in the prequel trilogies. It represents the Emperor whenever he is on screen. Williams also uses it conspicuously in the victory celebration at the end of Phantom Menace. Ewoks Theme Titled Parade of the Ewoks in the score for Episode VI, it is a light-hearted theme played during scenes in the Ewok village, during the Endor battle and in the end credits. Luke and Leias Theme This theme is heard only twice and only in Episode VI. It links Luke and Leia as brother and sister. It is more mature than the Love Theme and Leias Theme from the previous films. Victory Celebration This theme is used for the victory of the Alliance. In addition to these major motifs, there are minor themes used throughout the series that are used to represent some of the other characters and scenes in the original trilogy. These motifs are generally heard once and not much development took place for further use. Minor Motifs Arrival on Tatooine This is used in Episode IV and then again in Episode I. Tusken Raiders Theme Used when the Tusken Raiders are first introduced in Episode IV and when they attack Luke. Later used when Anakin destroys their camp in Episode II. Throne Room March Used in the original trilogy when Vader is present and later when the Emperor is shown in Episode VI. The final elements of music John Williams wrote for the original trilogy were the pieces that were performed as part of ‘live sequences. Before he became a film composer, John Williams was a jazz pianist going by the name of Johnny Williams. The ‘live elements reflect his earlier musical career with the use of jazz, classical and world music elements. These were: The two songs played in the Cantina on Tatooine entitled, Cantina Band and Cantina Band #2. They were in a swing style and the first tune became popular on the radio after the initial film release in 1977, while #2 could only be heard when Obi-Wan is speaking with Han Solo for the first time. Jabbas Baroque Recital is heard when R2D2 and C3PO arrive to give Jabba the message from Luke Skywalker in Episode VI. In the year 1839, Page had introduced Brady to Samuel F. B. The show is a reality game show about cooking, hosted by two chefs. The article explains how the show had appealed to young audiences. ‘MasterChef’, claims the article, has caused an increase in television ratings for the channel from which it is shown. The show has also given children extra culinary knowledge. Now, children are more interested and more critical about what they eat. They also judge their own food and the food prepared by their parents or other people. The show sparked numerous cooking lessons and workshops. Numerous recipes featured on the show have also been downloaded over the internet. Personal Opinion: I always believe that teaching children how to cook will help them in the future. Culinary skills learned early will definitely result to future households where food is a primary concern. MasterChef, and its effects on young audiences illustrates the possibility of making young audiences interested not only in the cooking show but more importantly in the food that they eat. Summary 2: This article is about the Community Gardens program which has three goals; to bring the community and the government together to address nutritional problems, to promote horticultural knowledge and initiate an exchange of indigenous horticultural knowledge, and to create an indigenous garden industry which will give communities livelihood and address their health needs. Many vegetable patches mushroomed all over town because of this and each household began to eat what they produced. This was a very welcome change for the people of Wangkatjungka, second to the community ban on alcohol. The article claims that this trend in backyard gardening has contributed so much to the community in that it has vowed to support and continue the project until each household in the community has their own vegetable patch. Personal Opinion: Having your own vegetable patch is such a good idea for me that I might even be starting my own. This article has given me enough new insights to consider the benefits of backyard grown produce and look into the possibility of having my own vegetable garden. I like fresh vegetables, and I like freshly picked organic fruits and vegetables even better. Summary 4: The relationship of diabetes and the eating habits of people is tackled in this article. In it a study by a certain Himsworth is mentioned that showed why third world countries had lesser incidence of diabetes and obesity compared to Western countries. The article attributes this to the kind of food that people eat in these countries; third world countries have more unprocessed carbohydrates and adequate animal protein in their diets than in Western countries. The article also outlines the value of healthy and basic or simpler eating in the control of diabetes and other metabolic disorders. It states that people who eat more plant or fruit based food are less likely to suffer metabolic disorders like diabetes and obesity. Personal Opinion: There are so many metabolic disorders that cause a myriad of health problems nowadays and it is comforting to know that the best weapon against these diseases is simply, basic and healthy eating. I am a believer in the idiom that ‘prevention is better than a cure’ as well as in the motto that ‘it would be better to spend money on healthy food than on medicine. † The insights offered in this article have encouraged me to eat healthier and begin my pursuit of a longer, healthier life. Summary 5: To sum up this entire article, one can simply say that it taunts at the way the judges in the show MasterChef make their judgments and throw snide comments at their contestants. The article purports that the decision of the MasterChef judges are influenced by the aesthetic or visual quality of the food presented and not by palatability of the food. The article implies that the show does not give justice to the way ordinary people cook, rather it insults the cooking skills of ordinary people by showing that cooking on television is not the same as real cooking, and that in the MasterChef kitchen, one doesn’t have to cook delicious food if one can be chefy with the presentation. Personal Opinion: I have seen the show, MasterChef myself and this article seems to have reason to claim that the judges in the show do not necessarily judge according to how ordinary people cook but have begun to become influenced by how one would expect food prepared by a professional chef. I believe that it is the show’s spontaneity and ‘reality’ that gives it its appeal and if the judges fail to remain in these ideals the show will ultimately fail.
